Williams-Sonoma smart thermometer App Reviews

Great for the thermometer, bad for the predictions

While we were cooking our turkey, we changed the temperature of the oven due to the nature of our recipe. It didnt seem to plan for that, and even though it was only a quarter way done, it still said that there were only 15 seconds left, at which point it quickly added 20 minutes at the last second, which could have easily ruined the turkey if we had not been watching it. The fact that some of the alerts rely on the time remaining prediction almost make those features completely useless, and therefore not recommended until they fix it.

Perfect pork tenderloin!

I just bought this Monday and ran home and roasted a pork tenderloin. The app told me where to place the probe and the timers allowed me to coordinate the side dishes! A must have for all food nerds, put it on your wish list!

Not working

Just got this and it looks supernice, like my Nest. But unlike the Nest, which connected in one swift operation to my wireless, this device connected exactly once, and since then its either one reinstall after the other or error connecting - Williams Sonoma, please dont make this like healthcare.gov!

Problems with Mac Time-Capsule

I bought this while at a Williams-Sonoma store after being shown what it can do. I couldn’t wait to get home and set it up. It is packed well and there is not much to it. The documentation included is a small double folder paper. If give basic instructions and the app is where you get most of the help. It also has to call them if you need additional support. I have a Time capsule with both 2.4 and 5GHz networks. I got the app on 2 different iPads and went through the setup. It does ask you to write down your network name and password, good idea. You need to change your iPad wireless to the thermo and then enter your network name. Wish it would scan networks and let you pick but that is not an option. You also are asked for the password and encryption type. It then sends this info to the thermo so it can connect to your wifi. After all this you then connect back to your home network and should be able to wirelessly connect to your new smart thermo and start playing. I have spent more than 3 hours of my life trying to get this to work and quadruple check I typed in everything right. I even called the support number which is just the normal number to check the status of an order. I spoke to a rep you said all he could do is look up online if there were help pages. FAIL. I was told to take it back to the store and have them setup the device. So I can now take my home wifi unit and cables, my new thermometer and my iPad so a store clerk can read the same simple instructions and fail to connect. They need to fix this or add that this currently iOS only app does not work with apple routers.

Needs an iPad optimized version, but otherwise great!

I bought this today, got home, and had it in a ham in less than five minutes. The WiFi setup is extremely easy — if you download the app first, it will walk you through the setup step by step, and will take less than a minute. The timers are OK to set with a set time duration, but my favorite feature is the custom alerts by temp or time that you can either set “After Start” or “Before Finish”. They pairs very well with the smart timer. My primary complaint is the lack of an iPad optimized version of the app. Sure, the iPhone optimized app works fine, but doesn’t have the graphics it should have and cannot rotate. An iPad version would also allow even more added functionality. A great app and kitchen tool overall, and I hope it continues to improve.

Great idea, poor execution

Thermometer won’t stay on WhyFi no matter what I’ve tried. Tried multiple routers and every time it goes to sleep it never re-joins the network.

Does not work

Does not work with my secured Linksys router. App crashes if you try to connect to a router without a password. Frustrating.

Great idea, needs a few tweaks

Performed as expected, but the alarms dont fire if you leave the app or you iPhone goes to sleep.

Just won’t work

I bought this app about a month ago and it set up just fine. However, now it just won’t work. The thermometer shows it is connected to my wireless - but it no longer connects to the app! Ive re-set it, and called WS for support. They told me to swap it out for a new one at a local WS store. OK -I did this: Ive also re-installed the app - and nothing. The thermometer won’t show up in my settings unless I do a hard re-set; after I do the re-set, the thermometer disappears from my wi fi settings. The app is useless to me and the thermometer is just another probe thermometer without it - and a very expensive one which I don’t need. This is going back to the WS asap! Not worth the time I’ve spent trying to get it to work

Almost done

Would be at least four stars if the alerts could be timed to the end of the rest period the roast needs, rather than the time it comes out of the oven. Also, if you dont have autolock turned off, the alarm wont go off on the iPad until you unlock it -- which makes the alarms a lot less useful.

Very Disappointed

The concept is great. Thats why I bought it. A couple of days before Thanksgiving I took the time to get it all set up. Forget the 5 minutes they say, it takes longer. Thanksgiving morning I bring it out and set it up. My iPhone does not find it at all. I follow the instructions several times to get it to sync. No luck so I just used its base station for the temperature. The process for syncing is a problem with this product. Glad to see it now has an iPad version. Now work on the syncing problem.

Doesnt work

You have updated the app but not addressed the problems of not reconnecting to the network after powering the thermometer off and on, and alerts only working when the app is running and the phone is not locked. These issues make the device inconvenient to use and a rather costly paper weight. I am also very disappointed that you are removing negative reviews and comments about the product from your own website. If you made a mistake own it and rework your device. Dont falsify reviews. Not clear as to why you updated the app for the depreciated WEP protocol. Unless you were also trying to get the app reviews reset. You maybe should have found better testers and looked at other devices that serve similar functions. You could have worked out the wifi then had the device report data to the cloud where you could then use the web from any device and write nice apps to access the data for specific devices. And even up the game on the notification options. Then I could leave my house and still keep an eye on things, good for the turkey on the grill or other long cooking projects. --original review-- To keep it short it doesnt return to the network after being powered off and back on again. Thus requiring a hard reset and going through the laborious initial set up again. They told me to charge it 24 hours before it would work. That seemed incredibly weird since it came at 80% charge. I did it anyway and it still didnt help. Dont buy this device for more than $5.

Dont buy this product

Does not work. I tried with two separate routers and neither would connect. There are much better remote thermometers for half (or more) of the cost.

App wont connect to unit

Sleek design. Professional looking. Doesnt work. unit connected to router but the app wont connect. Will return to Williams Sonoma.

Lasted two hours

Finally got it to talk to the app in my iPhone. Not an easy task. It worked for about two hours before the screen went blank, lit but blank. Resetting it and turning the power on and off do not restore it. Yes, its fully charged. Its a pretty expensive paper weight.

Fix the bug

Was very excited to get this item. The thermometer itself works fantastic. Spot on and very easy to use. The App set up is very straight forward and works great as long as you never power the thermometer off. Once its been powered off, it will not reconnect to your iOS device. Only way to get it to reconnect is to reset and do Initial set up all over again. I went through this routine several times. Flat out will not reconnect after being powered off. WS, fix the bug and Ill gladly give you 5 stars. As for now, very expensive item to have such a faulty bug!!!

Works Great!

I would ignore the low reviews here as these folks just dont seem to know what they are doing or cant follow instructions. The instructions specify that you need to be using iOS 6.0 or later. My unit connected flawlessly on the first attempt and I even powered down my thermometer AND iPad Air and when I powered everything back up everything reconnected automatically. I am very much looking forward to actually trying out the functionality of the smart thermometer and app!

Some major flaws

I purchased the thermometer for my mother, who is running iOS7 on both her iPad and iPhone and the setup was awkward, but pretty straightforward, as it walks you through the process. Unfortunately, the thermometer doesn’t seem to reconnect to the wifi after it sleeps/powers down. The app cannot locate it and you must go through the entire setup process again. Very disappointing, but hopefully it will be resolved at some point in the near future and I will purchase it again for her.

Does not work

This new smart device does not connect to my iPhone 5 nor my iPad Air. When researching why not via google I see numerous negative reviews including very poor technical support from the WS help line. Most say the app does not support various router brands. It will be returned and the app deleted.

Works well after lots of troubleshooting

I got the thermometer for Xmas and have been using it regularly for the past 3 weeks. I experienced the same problems as most users, namely the device could not reconnect after powering off the thermometer. After lengthy calls to WS customer service, I made a couple tweaks to settings that seem to have fixed the issue. Specifically, I had to manually select a channel for my router (I set it to 7, apparently something bad happens when you use 13), and I also was told to make sure my wpa password was less than 15 characters. While admittedly it was annoying to have to change my wifi security settings, once I changed to a shorter wpa password (8 characters) the app reconnects easily every time I try. Not sure why this is the case, or why WS doesnt just give you these instructions up front, but it fixed the issue for me. Only reason Im not giving 5 stars is that I cant seem to get the push notifications on the app to work correctly. Alerts only come through when the app is open and the phone unlocked, even with the disable app sleep option being used. In all, I love the device. Its a very cool gadget. May not be worth $200, but as with most WS products youre paying a little extra for an intangible cool factor, and you definitely get that here.
